Comments: I'm interested in learning about and visiting the Stehekin area. My grandparents met there in the early 1900's. Sounds beautiful. Would be very interested to find a history of the Stehekin area. My grandfather was Thomas James Maloney and my grandmother was Eunice George. He was a powder man in the mines and she was a cook in the camps.

Name: Don Thomason

From: Originally from Wauconda, now live in Moses Lake, WA
Time: 2000-03-12 07:50:14
Comments: I am a great-grandson of Alfred Bertram and Lucinda (Johnson) Thomason, who moved to Wauconda in 1899 to prove up on their oldest son's (Frank) homestead approximately 1/2 mile northwest of the junction of Toroda Creek and Meadow Creek. My great-uncle, Frank Thomason, went to Wauconda on horseback from Fixed Ridge, Idaho, through Waterville, WA, in 1898 to homestead 160 acres there. He left to return to Latah County (Fixed Ridge) in that Fall to get his belongings and move everything there. But he contacted Typhoid Fever and died on the way home at Rosalia, WA, where he is buried. My great-grandfather had a neighbor, Joe Tollett, who envied my grandfather's home and business of having a Livery Stable and horse switching station on the Chesaw-Toroda-Sheridan-Republic Stage Route. Joe Tollett kept pressuring my great-grandfather to sell this enterprise to him, so my Great-grandfather did, for $25,000 in about 1910. He sold 40 acres and his Livery Stable business, and sold the rest to my grandfather, Lonnie, and then moved to Scappoose, Oregon and began raising strawberries on a 100 acre plot there. About two years later the stageline shut down between Chesaw and Republic, and Joe Tollett never did see a return on his investment. The current area of 40 acres that my great-grandfather sold to Joe Tollet passed to Albert Tolllett his son then to Victor Lesamiz of Oroville, and now Frank Rounds Jr. (Sonny) owns it. None of the buildings that my great--grandfather built at that location remain. My grandfather Lonnie Thomason bought most of that homestead from his father and mother plus his brother's (Perry Thomason's) homestead, and my father (Everett Thomason) bought that from his father, plus the Lorz homestead and the Bowers and Galway places, amassing 880 acres and a 40 acre State school parcel of deeded/leased land and a 60-head cattle grazing permit on the Cumberland Mountain Range area of the Okanogan National Forest just to the north of it. In 1972 my father sold most of his place at Wauconda and moved to Moses Lake. He kept his portion of the original Alfred Thomason place that came to 120 acres, and gifted it to myself and my sister, Beatrice Fairburn of Kittitas and we jointly own it and take care of it today. The pasture has been leased in recent years to Marcia and Steve Henneman. Marcia is the daughter of Lester and Edna Schertenlieb. Lester Schertenlieb is the son of Lillian (Thomason) Schertenlieb, daughter of Alfred and Lucinda Thomason. I can be ccntacted at (509)766-6003. I have most of the Thomason family history recorded and on file at home.

I was born and raised in Oroville, Wash. and am interested in finding who holds the records to the cemetery in Chesaw. My Grandmother and Greatgrandmother are buried there. I have recently been reading the Okanogan Highlands books. I have a lot of fond memories of that area.

I am very interested in the history of Cle Elum, which was very nearly a ghost town after the end of coal mining, but which is now growing as a "bedroom" community to Seattle/Bellevue. About 600 people now commute the 90 miles to work.

I love the area but this work of yours makes me, for the first time, proud to live in Washington even if it is on the West side. This is a WONDERFUL thing you've done. I've always been interested in history and have done a little metal detecting. You've managed to bring both of them together in one helluva fine manner. Thank you very much, Dave.

My grandfather, Simon Shafer, started the Shafer Museum in Winthrop and operated a grocery and dry goods store in Winthrop for many years. I grew up in Winthrop and graduated from Winthrop High School in 1962. My dad, who will be 81 in April, and I have made several trips over to Montana visiting many gost towns over there. I have always enjoyed visiting them and thinking about what life must have been like back then. Me and my cousin own part interest in the Beck mining claim in the Slate creek Dist. We keep saying we are going to take some time off and hike into the site but have not gotten around to it sofar. I have not had much of a chance to read everything on your web page yet, but wanted to let you know how much I am enjoying it sofar. I am always glad to see someone preserving the local history and thank you for all your time and interesting web page.

Comments: First, your site's very well-designed and unique that has a professional image. It was also very interesting to read about some of its history. Also, liked the way you showed real pictures of different relics along with the articles talking about them. This way the visitor got a better idea of what you were talking about. Was also impressed with the number of visitors your site had within that time frame. Keep up the good work ! Come on over and submit your banner to my site for some free advertising ! : )

You have given your site a very personal meaning with your picture and also the dedication to your father. Your web-master Jim Jr. has done a surperb job on your website and it's nice to see you also give Jim Jr. so much graditude and credit, this is something you don't see on most websites. It's one of the reasons I enjoy visiting as I have the feeling that I know you. Keep up the great work Jerry and Jim Jr. as you have both done a terrific job..I will be back again real soon.

The second is that it is organzed well. If I don't get lost then someone did somethng right. This place falls under both catagores. This is why I've returned again. You've really done a great job here.

Comments: It was nice to see your website as I am from the Northeastern Washington area. I lived in Metaline Falls in the early 1970's when the mine was still in operation up there. I then lived in Ione for 5 years, and now live in Spokane. It was a great experience living in the Metaline Falls/Ione area. I enjoyed exploring the areas history. When I first moved there, Tiger still had many buildings, but I remember one that still had lace curtains in the glassless windows. As I walked around the buildings, that one seemed to sing of happier days with each flap of the curtains in the breeze. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to your site and extend an invitation to mine. The welcome mat is always out and a light kept on for the late night visitor.

I mostly grew up on the Western side of Washington. You know the side... "occupied by latte drinking, aerospace and computer nerds". LOL...Only there wasn't much of that going on in the Reservations I lived in. You are right about Western an Eastern Washington being differant as night and day. I remember Eastern Washington being dry and desert like copmared to the moist green of Western Washington. I always enjoyed my visits to the east sde of the state. I really do like what your website.

Comments: Jerry! Great and honour to see your entry in my guestbook! Em! I would say, you have a great research web site! I guess you must have spent a lot time and efforts for doing so! I cherished your appreciation of life from the past, present and future! Even more glad to know that you found back your childhood great memories. Those sceneries captured are beautiful and hope to see more too. Your only picture taken is simply COOL! I wish I can dress that one day and hope to own a cowboy hat for a collection, really :)! Keep up the great works and thank you for the encouragement given! Yeah!

Comments: Howdy Jerry,

You have created a remarkable site. Very interesting! Don't know if you realized it when you dropped by ours that Eastern Washington is our old, and original stomping ground. During younger years, family Sunday rides (car day trips) were our main source of entertainment. Drives out into the country side and discovering some of the places mentioned here.

Later, after meeting and marrying my husband, our favorite became exploring the Blue Mountains of southeastern Washington and investigating old, abandoned homesteads there.

From one history buff to another, thanks! This is a great site.

Have a bright and sunny day!

Please do come visit. Give us a rank while your there.
